The ISC started in 1995 when a group of students felt it essential to create a place by international students for international students. Given that Scottish university students didn’t seem to interact with international students,  this group wanted a place where all could feel accepted.

Ultimately the ISC’s role was to ensure the experiences of international students at the University of Edinburgh by ensuring university support for international students. This involved the establishment of the ISC lounge (formerly at 22b Buccleuch Place), the provision of trips, social events, and the Buddy Program, and bringing the complaints and queries of international students to the attention of the university. The latter saw the ISC persistently lobbying on behalf of international students for better financial support and  representation within the university. While the role of the ISC has shifted over the years, we continue to build a community for international students through our provision of trips, social events, and the running of the lounge.
